The third annual Art for Ed’s Sake (Art for Education’s Sake) event will take place on Friday, September 23, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at Zeitgeist – 222 East Superior Street, Duluth.
Sponsored by Zeitgeist, the Art for Ed’s Sake event will feature a Silent Auction, cash bar, hors d’oeuvres, and special musical guest Georganne Hunter. Join us as we celebrate the importance of visual and media arts education in our schools, and raise funds to continue to support the art education programs of the Duluth Public Schools. Participants are invited to “dress as your favorite artist or artwork, or come as you are.”
Tickets are available at http://boxofficex.printtixusa.com/zeitgeistarts/donate?w=AfES
A $20 donation is suggested.
Visual and Media Arts in our schools provide our students with a core experience in visual literacy. Much as we read words, de-code them for meaning, learn structures of grammar, and write for meaning, arts instruction teaches students to de-code images, examine their structures (composition), determine meaning and cultural context, and create. It is said that people now see an average of about 5,000 images per day, compared to 500 in the 1970’s; yet the courses in schools that teach this literacy are often the first to be cut when budget crises arise. Visual literacy is ‘core’ to education.
Art teacher Chrissy Valento has been collecting items for the Silent Auction. “I can say that it has been great collecting donations from local businesses and artists. Everyone has been so kind and willing to donate items for our Silent Auction. Many people have talked about how they are more than willing to support our cause and think the arts are very important for our young people in the schools.”
Other supporters of the event include The New Scenic Cafe, Toasty’s, Positively Third Street Bakery, Chris Monroe, Hothouse Design & Post, Georganne Hunter, and the individuals, businesses and artists who have donated Silent Auction items.
Please contact us with any questions and we look forward to seeing you on the 23rd!
